State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Awards

Since its creation by the General Assembly and the governor in 1986, the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards (OFA) program has recognized and rewarded excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and public service among the faculties of the commonwealth's public and private institutions of higher education. Over the past years, faculty members—from all types of institutions, disciplines, specialties, and ranks—have received statewide recognition as well as monetary rewards.

The OFA program affords SCHEV and the entire commonwealth the opportunity to formally recognize and celebrate the exceptional contributions that faculty members make to their students, academic disciplines, institutions and communities. The awards also represent an excellent window of opportunity for revealing and reinforcing to the public how higher education positively impacts Virginia's educational, cultural, economic and civic vitality.

Virginia Tech can recommend up to 10 faculty members for the SCHEV OFA. Each year the University Honorifics Committee invites electronic nominations for the OFA. A call for nominations is typically sent out in early June. It contains deadlines and formatting information for the year. A nomination must be endorsed by the dean of the faculty member’s college or the College Honorifics Committee.

The University Honorifics Committee values the outstanding achievements in teaching and learning created by faculty members and experienced by students. They will review all nominations and determine candidates to be forwarded to SCHEV.

All nominations must be delivered electronically to Peter Doolittle (pdoo@vt.edu), Director, Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research, by the deadline which is set each year and must follow the SCHEV OFA guidelines for that year. For more information contact Dr. Doolittle, CIDER, 111 Hillcrest Hall, Campus 0453, Phone: 540-231-6995, Email: pdoo@vt.edu

For more information about the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards see: http://www.schev.edu/AdminFaculty/OFAprogramIndex.asp

Academy of Advising Excellence

The Academy of Advising Excellence was established by the provost to recognize those advisors who have demonstrated exemplary advising practices. The academy consists of all advisors who have received university-level awards for excellence in advising. For further information, please contact Kimberly S. Brown, Director, Undergraduate Academic Advising Center.

Academy of Faculty Service

In recognition of exceptional service in university governance given by faculty members beyond the usual responsibilities of their faculty appointments, the university has established the Academy of Faculty Service. Appointments to the academy are made by the provost in the spring of each academic year to recognize individuals who have served in the following positions during that year: president of the Faculty Senate, vice president of the Faculty Senate, secretary of the Faculty Senate, chairperson of the Faculty Senate Reconciliation Committee, chairperson of the Academy of Teaching Excellence, chairperson of the Faculty Review Committee, and chairperson of the university Honor System Review Board, and other appointments as deemed appropriate by the provost. For further information, please contact Jack Finney, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs.

Academy of Outreach Excellence

The Academy of Outreach Excellence recognizes members of the faculty who have contributed to excellence in the outreach mission of the university. Academy members elect annually a maximum of four new members including the recipients of the Alumni Award for Extension Excellence and the Alumni Award for Outreach Excellence and two at-large members who have made major contributions in outreach. At-large members, who are selected based on their outstanding outreach record, may be nominated by any university employee. The annual election of at-large members from the nominees is conducted by those selected to academy membership during the previous three years. All academy members retain their membership as long as they are employed by the university. Newly elected members have an "active service" status for three years. Selection criteria for academy members include innovation, creativity, program results, subject-matter expertise, communication skills, and professional activities in extension and outreach. For further information, please contact John Dooley, Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs.

Academy of Teaching Excellence

The six major award winners each year (three Wine Awards, one Sporn Award for the Teaching of Introductory Subjects, and two Alumni Teaching Awards) are inducted into the Academy of Teaching Excellence for a term of three years. Although "active service" in the academy is for three years, membership is for life. An individual who has received one of the six major teaching awards is ineligibile for any other for a period of seven years; an individual may receive any particular award only once. For further information, please visit the academy's website.
