Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising

Established by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising is presented annually by the Office of the Provost to recognize Virginia Tech faculty who have been particularly dedicated to and effective in the advising of undergraduate students. Recipients may be nominated by university faculty or students, are selected by a committee of former award winners, and are awarded a $2,000 cash prize. Provost's Award for Excellence in Advising

Sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the Alumni Award for Excellence in International Education is presented annually to a Virginia Tech faculty or staff member who has had a significant impact on international education at the university. Selection is based upon contributions to the internationalization of Virginia Tech, the impact on students, the impact on the campus and community, the significance of the initiative, and the sustainability of the initiative. One award is given to an Extension specialist and one is given to an Extension agent. Each recipient is awarded a $2,000 cash prize. Alumni Awards for Outreach Excellence

Established by the university's Commission on Outreach and International Affairs with the support of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the Alumni Award for Outreach Excellence is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions by Virginia Tech faculty members who have extended the university's outreach mission throughout the commonwealth, the nation, and the world. Recipients are nominated by their peers, are awarded a $2,000 cash prize, and are inducted into the university's Academy of Outreach Excellence. Alumni Awards for Excellence in Teaching

Established in 1982 by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented annually to honor two Virginia Tech faculty members for teaching excellence. Award recipients are selected by the university's Academy of Teaching Excellence and are chosen from among those faculty members who have received certificates of teaching excellence from their respective colleges during the preceding three years. Certificates of Teaching Excellence

Certificates of teaching excellence are awarded annually by the university to 21 faculty members selected by the individual colleges. The number awarded is proportionately distributed over the university according to the number of instructional faculty positions allotted to each college, with each college awarding at least one certificate. Edward S. Diggs Teaching Scholars Award

Sponsored by the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence, the Diggs Teaching Scholars Award was established in 1992 and is presented annually to three Virginia Tech faculty members to recognize exceptional contributions to the teaching program and learning environment. A cash award is given to each recipient and his or her respective department. A year after receiving the award, new Diggs Teaching Scholars are invited to lead the Diggs Roundtable, a series of presentations and a discussion related to their innovative teaching. The award is supported by an endowed fund established through an estate gift from the late Edward S. and Hattie Wilson Diggs. Mr. Diggs was a 1914 graduate of Virginia Tech. Sporn Award for Teaching Introductory Subjects

Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Virginia Tech Academy for Teaching Excellence, the Sporn Award for Excellence in Teaching Introductory Subjects is presented annually to a Virginia Tech faculty member to recognize excellence in teaching introductory-level courses. Nominations are received from students, and recipients are selected by a committee comprised of student representatives from Omicron Delta Kappa and Golden Key honor societies and a faculty advisor who was the previous year's award winner. Recipients are awarded a $2,000 cash prize and are inducted into the university's Academy of Teaching Excellence. The award was established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Philip J. Sporn. Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Virginia Tech Academy for Teaching Excellence, the Sporn Award for Excellence in Teaching Introductory Engineering Subjects is presented annually to a Virginia Tech faculty member to recognize excellence in teaching undergraduate engineering courses. Nominations are received from students only, and recipients are selected by a committee comprised of student representatives from Omicron Delta Kappa and Golden Key honor societies and a faculty advisor who was the previous year's award winner. William E. Wine Award

Established to honor the former rector of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors and president of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the William E. Wine Award is presented annually to three Virginia Tech faculty members to recognize "a history of university teaching excellence." Nominations by students, alumni, and faculty in each college are reviewed by respective college selection committees. The colleges' candidates are reviewed by a university-wide committee, which then selects the three award winners. XCaliber Award for Excellence in Technology Assisted Teaching and Learning

Established in 1996 by the Office of the Provost, the XCaliber Award (shorthand for exceptional, high-caliber work) is presented annually by the Virginia Tech Center for Innovation in Learning to recognize individual faculty members or teams of faculty and staff who have made significant contributions towards integrating technology into teaching and learning experiences. The award celebrates innovative approaches to teaching with technology that illustrate student-centered learning activities. Recipients receive a cash award and are called upon to demonstrate their award-winning work with their colleagues. Academy of Advising Excellence

The Academy of Advising Excellence was established by the provost to recognize those advisors who have demonstrated exemplary advising practices. The academy consists of all advisors who have received university-level awards for excellence in advising. For further information, please contactKimberly S. Academy of Faculty Service

In recognition of exceptional service in university governance given by faculty members beyond the usual responsibilities of their faculty appointments, the university has established the Academy of Faculty Service. Appointments to the academy are made by the provost in the spring of each academic year to recognize individuals who have served in the following positions during that year: president of the Faculty Senate, vice president of the Faculty Senate, secretary of the Faculty Senate, chairperson of the Faculty Senate Reconciliation Committee, chairperson of the Academy of Teaching Excellence, chairperson of the Faculty Review Committee, and chairperson of the university Honor System Review Board, and other appointments as deemed appropriate by the provost. Academy of Outreach Excellence

The Academy of Outreach Excellence recognizes members of the faculty who have contributed to excellence in the outreach mission of the university. Academy members elect annually a maximum of four new members including the recipients of the Alumni Award for Extension Excellence and the Alumni Award for Outreach Excellence and two at-large members who have made major contributions in outreach. At-large members, who are selected based on their outstanding outreach record, may be nominated by any university employee. The annual election of at-large members from the nominees is conducted by those selected to academy membership during the previous three years. All academy members retain their membership as long as they are employed by the university. Newly elected members have an "active service" status for three years. Selection criteria for academy members include innovation, creativity, program results, subject-matter expertise, communication skills, and professional activities in extension and outreach. Academy of Teaching Excellence

The six major award winners each year (three Wine Awards, one Sporn Award for the Teaching of Introductory Subjects, and two Alumni Teaching Awards) are inducted into the Academy of Teaching Excellence for a term of three years. Although "active service" in the academy is for three years, membership is for life. An individual who has received one of the six major teaching awards is ineligibile for any other for a period of seven years; an individual may receive any particular award only once.
