Faculty Writing Group Grant Program

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) are piloting a grant program to provide funding to support tenured or continued appointment faculty in their career development. The primary goal of this grant program is to encourage faculty to form collaborative support networks outside of their home departments and colleges, and to encourage research and writing productivity in support of career advancement at Virginia Tech beyond tenure.

Groups will receive a $2,000 grant toward their proposed goals.
Up to 5 grants will be funded each year.

2019-20 Faculty Writing Group Grant Application

Proposals for this grant program should be submitted electronically to Rachel Gabriele on or before April 1, 2019 for consideration. 

Funds for accepted proposals will be transferred in July or August of 2019.

Program and Proposal Development Details

  • Tenured or Continued-Appointment faculty are invited to form a group of 5-10 other faculty members at any rank and submit a proposal for an academic year-long program of their own design that is focused on the above goal. 
  • Groups should have a designated convener (who should be a tenured  or continued-appointment faculty member) who will serve as the main point of contact for the group, and will facilitate and participate in, the collective work of the group. Funds will be transferred to the college of the convener unless other arrangements are requested in the application.
  • The convener will submit (electronically) a brief report  to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs in the fall semester following the end of the group’s last formal meeting. The report should describe the group's successes and challenges with regards to proposed goals. 
  • In addition, group members may be asked to participate in a workshop or an evaluation activity to improve the program.

Information Session/Workshops

To assist in the development of their projects, conveners and other interested participants can join Provost's office staff at several hands-on information sessions. At these sessions, you will be able to:

  • get a brief overview of the program
  • discuss projects with other faculty members
  • plan your proposal with your group
  • meet other faculty to network and form a writing group
  • ask questions about the program and proposal process

Sessions will be held in the spring at the Inn at Virginia Tech
(coffee and light refreshments provided). Dates and registration will be available on this website once finalized.

Proposal Assessment Guidelines

Proposals will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • advances faculty career development needs
  • clearly articulated goals
  • proportion of group members who are tenured or on continued appointment
  • potential positive impact to the individuals, group and broader university community
  • participation from multiple departments and/or colleges
