Internships in the NRV: NRV Experience

Go Virginia interns participated in the 2020 NRV Experience hosted by our close partners at Onward NRV

"Workforce is key to economic development--developing it within our region and attracting it from elsewhere. Roanoke County appreciates the work that Virginia Tech is doing through its Developing a Talent Destination project by building bridges between the academic community and businesses, facilitating internships and bringing classroom resources to real-world business problems. These are all needed and much appreciated. And Roanoke County Economic Development Department is glad to partner with VT in this important work and make it happen.”

Tom Rowley
Economic Development Manager for Roanoke County

"We are in the early stages, but thus far, the program has been a great incentive for us to increase our summer internship opportunities, and has given us a huge injection of enthusiasm for Virginia Tech interns. Specifically, we have made over 15 employment offers to past interns, only to lose them to Northern Virginia employers.  This program has encouraged us to offer a more competitive wage, as well as provide a tailored, local experience that highlights the advantages of living in Southwest Virginia."

Go Virginia Faculty Networking and Internship Fair Recap

This event—for faculty, students, and local employers—was on February 3, 2020, in the Latham Ballroom at The Inn at Virginia Tech.

About the Program

As part of these efforts the Developing a Destination for Talent Program is designed to create a destination for talent in the local region by creating hubs for interactions between local employers, students and faculty at Virginia Tech (VT) and local government agencies involved in economic development activities.

The VT Blacksburg campus is located in an exciting and dynamic place

With opportunities to leverage your interest in technological and social advancement and a location that allows you to optimize the work, live, play lifestyle

Opportunity to Create Pathways

Through these interactions there is an opportunity to create pathways of talent from VT to employers in the critical areas such as Manufacturing, Life Sciences and Health Care, Food and Beverage Processing, and Emerging Technologies and IT.

Internships for Students

One way we are looking to facilitate this process is through internships for students with local employers. We also hope to facilitate opportunities for VT faculty to engage in existing opportunities or pursue new opportunities for engagement with employers and students through project based work opportunities.

Build Long-term Relationships

By interacting with student interns and building familiarity with companies in the local region employers have the opportunity to build long-term relationships with a talent pool emerging from VT.
